How to Maintain Hardwood Furniture

When investing in a custom, handcrafted piece of furniture, you want to ensure that it can be maintained well by you. With efforts in the right direction, you will be able to maintain the appearance and increase longevity of the product.

Let’s look at some easy ways to care for solid wood Furniture:

Dusting

Wipe your surface with a soft, damp cloth to keep them free of dust and dirt. Follow it up with a dry, cotton cloth to dry the surface and absorb any extra moisture. Dusting should be done on a regular basis in short intervals, depending on your environment.

Cleaning

If your solid wood furniture has collected some difficult dirt, it’s time to give it a nice wash with a mild soap and water. Take extra precautions to ensure that you dry the furniture thoroughly after the wash. Furniture cleaners can also be used to achieve the same. Be mindful of the chemicals you’re using-  cleansers containing bleach are not recommended. Steer clear of ammonia as well as it can discolor varnish and other top coats.

Avoid using abrasive cleaning or scrubbing pads that can harm the surface. Also avoid using silicone based products as they can erode top finishes and varnish.

Prevent Heat Damage

Although tables are meant to hold food dishes, it is a good practice to use trivets or hot pads to break the contact between hot dishes and the surface of the table. Wooden furniture should also be kept away from heat vents and kept at a safe distance from other heat sources such as radiators and fireplaces. Using a humidifier in the dry months of winter can prevent the wood from shrinking, cracking or drying out. An air conditioner can be used in the hot summer months to ensure healthy moisture content in the room. Be mindful while placing candles on wooden surfaces. Extremely hot candle holders can discolor wood.

Prevent Water Damage

As previously mentioned, make sure to always follow up a wet wash with a dry wipe to ensure there is no extra moisture on the wood. Spills should be soaked and dried as soon as possible to minimize damage. Using coasters for beverages is a great way of preventing discoloration of the surface due to condensation.

Prevent Scratches

Table linen including tablecloth, runners and placemats are an excellent way to increase the longevity of the wooden surfaces by preventing scratches. Use these on a regular basis to keep your wooden furniture looking fresh as new.

Prevent Structural Damage

While shifting furniture around, especially pieces with fixtures and multiple pieces, it is a good practice to pick them up and then place them at the desired place. Dragging, pulling or pushing motions put unnecessary pressure on the joints that hold the piece together and can result in the item losing its strength or even some damage.

Wooden furniture is durable and can last for generations if cared for properly. It’s worth your time to devote some time to maintain your wooden furniture. By taking the necessary steps to preserve your gorgeous furniture, you also preserve the memories that were created around that specific piece.
